Manchester City and Brazil forward Robinho believes that playing Futebol de Salao (FDS)l as a youngster played a crucial role in his footballing development.
FDS, which forms the core aspect of each Brazilian Soccer Schools (BSS) session, uses a smaller, weighted football to improve all aspects of a footballer's technique, and other great Brazilians to have played the game include Pele, Zico, Jairzingho and Ronaldinho.
BSS is the largest football coaching network in the world and it's use of FDS is already reaping rewards, with the likes of Micah Richards, Robinho's teammate at the City of Manchester stadium, as well as John Bostock and Aidan White emerging from its ranks.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Robinho said: "FDS helped me a lot; a lot of things I do on the pitch today stem from my days playing Futebol de Salaol.
"It is a really enjoyable way of playing football and increasing your skills. Even now when I go home for my holidays I like to play.
"As for the technical ability I possess I don't think you can teach some of it. Certain people have god-given talent and I am lucky to be have given some that I do not waste. Even so I am always looking to improve.
"I am constantly working at my game. You cannot afford to stand still. Everything needs to improve, shooting with both feet and scoring with my head! My inspiration is just looking at the ball. It is all I need."
