The FIFA World Cup may be about to begin in South Africa but young players in Hong Kong had the chance to play their own international tournament last weekend.
The Makaraba Mini World Cup, co-organised by the South African Consulate, the Hong Kong Home Affairs Bureau and the Hong Kong Football Association, took place at Kowloon’s King’s Park sports ground on 6th June. The under 12s 7-a-side competition was in honour of FIFA’s headline event and was opened by Nomatemba Tambo, the South African Consulate General, and Brian Leung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Football Association.
Different nations were represented and Brazilian Soccer Schools Hong Kong were asked to represent the five-time champions, Brazil. The Brazilian Consulate got behind BSS Hong Kong, providing flags, kits and even coming to cheer for the team.
A number of BSS players were also asked to represent other countries, including Holland, Nigeria and Denmark, but in the end, Brazil were too good for their opponents and they were crowned champions.
“It was a wonderful day,” said BSS Hong Kong coach Paul Smith. “Brazil went on to win the competition playing some wonderful football in the semi final and final, which was rewarded with George Pearson receiving the MVP award from Ms Tambo.”
Dunga will be hoping that his team are able to match the feats of BSS Hong Kong this summer. Brazil’s first game of the World Cup is against North Korea, Tuesday 15th June. |
