Brian Clough Schools Cup

The Brian Clough Schools Cup is the first ever National Futebol de Salão competition for all UK Primary Schools. In its inaugural year (academic year 2000/2001) schools from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England competed first on a local level, then a regional level before the national finals took place.

Since then, the event has run every year and grown in size and stature.  During previous tournaments, John Barnes, Peter Taylor and Socrates have attended to oversee the matches as well as presenting the winners with their prizes.

The tournament is for year 6 (last year in Primary School) and is open to both boys and girls. In 2002, a Girls only event, the ICFDS Girls Cup, was also introduced to encourage girls to take part as well.

cloughPerhaps fittingly as the ICFDS originated in Leeds it was a Leeds based school, Horsforth Newlaithes, which won the inaugural schools cup. The school had benefited from a series of coaching sessions from ICFDS coaches in the run up to the tournament and perhaps this showed as the team thoroughly deserved their triumph showing some great ability along the way. Subsequent teams from around the UK have gone on to win the events.

Schools everywhere enjoyed the tournament and felt it was a refreshing change from other school tournaments and initiatives as skilful play was openly applauded and there was a great spirit about the whole competition.

“The whole competition was outstanding for skill, spirit and performance. 10/10.”

Mr D. Allen, Aughton Primary School

“The football was an excellent standard, very competitive and sporting. I thought that the tournament was fantastic and shall certainly enter again. 10+/10.”

Mr H Pieniazek, Horsforth Newlaithes Junior School

"If God had intended for us to play football in the clouds he wouldn't have put grass on the ground."

BSS South Cheshire are looking to run their regional competition in November 2009. If your school might be interested then please get in touch through the contact us section

The ICFDS Girls Cup

In 2005, GarforfthTown F.C, the club by ICFDS founder Simon Clifford, was used as the venue for the Girls Cup Final.  This proved to be a such a success that the venue was used for the 2006 Schools and Girls Cup which were run simultaneously in July.

BSS South Cheshire would like to run a regional girls cup this year however it depends on interest. If your school has a group of girls in year 5 and 6 who would like to take part then please contact us.
