Brazilian Soccer Schools coaching is great for all players |
says former England International Danny MillsFormer Premiership and England player Danny Mills has been bringing his sons along to the Harrogate Brazilian Football Academy for several years. “At first I was a little sceptical until I took my son along to a session. I was so impressed that my eldest son now trains 4 times a week, 2 technical and 2 conditioning sessions, and the youngest twice a week. I think the skills they learn combined with matches really helps them develop. Brazilian Soccer Schools coaching is great for all players, helping to develop skills and ball control. Many under 10's have more tricks and skills than I ever had. I believe it is one of many fantastic aspects of coaching and would recommend it to everyone. The training at Brazilian Soccer Schools is perfect for the children to develop into fantastic footballers and become good people. I especially like the way the older players are encouraged to help, support and teach the younger ones.”
On the subject of professional academies, Danny added: “The subject of professional academies is a contentious one. We must remember that football is about enjoyment and having fun, and should not be taken too seriously. I would not encourage anyone to join a professional academy to the exclusion of playing with clubs, schools and friends though, until they reach their teenage years." "In my opinion, if any players are invited before then, by all means let them go, see it as an enjoyable experience for them, and an addition to what they do already. However it is vital to remember that it will most likely be only for a short term period. These clubs want to see as many players as possible. Remember even the top premiership squads only set the target of ONE player from their U18 Academy Squad to go on to play first team football.”

Nathan Merchant (aged 9) has completed the Skills Badge Scheme juggling section. In doing so, becoming the youngest player at the Harrogate Brazilian Football Academy to achieve this feat. When he first arrived his best score at kick ups was 1. His first challenge was to achieve 5 kick ups with the laced area of the foot. He quickly achieved success and stood out from his peers by achieving every challenge put in front of him until 4 years later he had completed all the core juggling on level 5. One of the many challenges is to complete 200 kick ups with the outside of the weaker foot. However, like many BSS players Nathan is two-footed and he comfortably completed the challenge in front of his training group and coaches at one of his training sessions. Before any football considerations Nathan has a fantastic attitude, temperament, and a humble nature which makes him a pleasure to coach. What he has achieved at such a young age is incredible and I doubt many professionals could match his achievements. Ball juggling is only a small part of our training programme and Nathan excels in many areas. Having received significant interest from professional clubs Nathan continues his BSS education by training up to 6 sessions per week. As a result he is becoming technically proficient at an astonishing rate. Technique, which is so often absent in English players at the highest level. Dad and BSS Coach John said of his son's achievement “Nathan was no better than anyone else on day 1 he has just taken on board the coaching, practised hard, and enjoys the challenge and subsequent achievement. We are very proud of what he has achieved” Congratulations on a wonderful achievement! |

What it’s like in the National squad? |
|
The ICFDS National Squad players also enjoyed a very hard week of training covering many of the aspects of our training program. The players showed a wonderful attitude, worked extremely hard and those that had been completing their training diaries since April had shown real progress in all areas of their games. All of the players left enthused and motivated to continue training and progressing at home. At Brazilian Soccer Schools we truly believe that we will produce players through our National Squads beyond any player we have seen in this country over the next decade.
Harrogate currently has 4 players in the National Squad and one of our players Mikey has written a piece about his experiences during the week. The national squad 2009 held at Trinity and All saints was a week long training camp for selected players all over the country from 13 years all the way through to 17. It was a long, hard and motivating week. The course involved a lot of physical assessments as well as technical. The week although very tough and demanding was enjoyable and the players got on really well. We played two matches at the start and end of the week against Sunderland BSS and Bermuda BSS. The week was a great learning experience and I can't wait to go again. By way of example a typical day consisted of getting up at 6:30 and going for a 2 mile warm up run, breakfast, then physical assessments, these included bleep test, 6 x 800 metres, core strength and upper body strength. Then in the afternoon after lunch there might be lectures or technical assessments or small sided games.
One evening we watched Garforth Town play but usually had a core session in the sports hall. We went to bed about 10:30 or 11 knowing we would be up again at 6:30 the following day. All in all we lived like professional footballers for a week and it was an inspiring insight. I've come away wanting to improve again on fitness, technical and match play and really look forward to going again.
