Any person involved with coaching women’s soccer should, at some point, pick up a book or two by Anson Dorrance. Parents and coaches can not only benefit from the insights which he provides into the differences between coaching girls and boys, but also from the pointers he shares on the value of structured training to the development of players and teams. I found my favorite quote in Anson Dorrance’s The Vision of a Champion, where he references Sociological Theory, a book by Daniel F. Chambliss… “…Excellence is accomplished through deliberate actions, ordinary in themselves, performed consistently and carefully, made into habits, compounded together, added up over time…” I read this quote soon after starting San Diego Brazilian Soccer Schools and was struck by the relevance that it had to what we do. It has since been embraced as a core principle which drives the design of our training sessions and is supported by The Skills Badge Scheme. Our sessions create a structured (deliberate) training environment, where we teach core skills (ordinary in themselves), performed to defined standards (consistently and carefully), applied to game conditions (made into habits), developed into more complex skills (compounded together) and performed on a regular basis (added up over time). |
